Limestone Purity Analysis

Limestone Purity Test EquipmentThe following is the introduction to an Application Brief on Limestone Purity Analysis; developed by Oxford Instruments and featuring the LabX-3500 x-ray fluorescence spectrometer.

Many industries have uses for limestone.  It supplies the calcium content in animal feeds, treats soil in agriculture, acts as a de-sulfurizer for stack emissions, is a filler in plastics and pharmaceuticals, is a fluxing agent in smelting, and is the largest component of cement.  Additionally, limestone is the raw material for the production of lime products.

LabX3500 XRF SpectrometerLimestone is a sedimentary rock consisting chiefly of calcium carbonate or calcium and magnesium carbonates.  High calcium limestone has less than 5% magnesium carbonate, 5%-35% magnesium limestone, and 35%-46% dolomitic limestone.  There is also siliceous limestone which contains sand or quartz.

Limestone XRF TestingThe analysis of limestone is essential to grade the product and to confirm its quality.  Calcium, magnesium, silicon, aluminum, and iron are the five elements most commonly determined with sometimes the inclusion of potassium.  Wavelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WD-XRF) is a well-known technique for the rapid, multi-elemental, analysis of limestone.  However, many people consider that WD-XRF instruments are too expensive for a small producer of limestone.

In order to provide a low cost analyzer that will measure six major elements in limestone with performance approach WD-XRF, Oxford Instruments offers the LabX-3500 system.  The LabX-3500 is an energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) analyzer that offers production control analysis of six elements at a much lower cost than WD-XRF.  It is a robust bench-top analyzer that combines accuracy, precision, speed, ease of use and (if required) transportable analysis.
