Companies considering Handheld XRF for portable alloy grade verification can also consider Handheld LIBS technology. LIBS stands for laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and carries a couple of main benefits over x-ray fluorescence - primarily one second measurement times and no x-ray source (so, no state registration requirements relating to x-ray). See video below for a demo of one second testing.
LIBS technology works by forcing a rapidly pulsed laser beam onto a sample, forming a plasma of the present elements and the emitted light determines the chemical composition through the systems software. It’s a quick process (again, one second measurements) that can increase testing capacity for certain organizations – it is commonly used for QA/QC of alloys and is very popular in scrap metal recycling.
As a distributor of Hitachi High-Tech, Eastern Applied Research offers the Hitachi Vulcan line of Handheld LIBS. The line has three variations, all provide grade identification with full chemistry and connect to the Hitachi ExTOPE data management system. The battery used can last for a full day of analyzer operation (based on one sample every five seconds for eight hours) and, like the Hitachi XRF line, the Hitachi LIBS systems are durable with dust and splash water protected design IP54 (NEMA 3 equivalent). |
The difference in the various Hitachi Handheld LIBS are the alloys that they are suitable for. The upper tier (Expert model) comes ready for stainless steels, low alloy steels, tool steels, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Sn, Ti, Zn alloys as well as Al and Mg alloys. While XRF will always be the preferred option in alloy verification, the benefits of LIBS technology will be a great benefit in specific situations and should be considered. Contact Eastern Applied Research to learn more about LIBS, comparing it to XRF for your use, or anything else relating to your alloy verification needs.
