How would you handle this XRF situation?

Put yourself, and your organization, in this position...you have had a good, reliable x-ray fluorescence analyzer for several years.  You have had an Eastern Applied Research field technician in on a regular basis for preventative maintenance and calibration visits, you have a properly working UPS to protect it from voltage spikes, you have kept the unit in a good working environment.  You have done everything required to limit problems with the system - you are a good XRF owner...but, every instrument has its day - today is your units. 

The XRF analyzer has some type of problem.  You call in an Eastern Applied field technician to evaluate the system and the news is not good.  Multiple major components have failed, causing the problems, and the cost to repair the unit is close to the cost to purchase a used XRF analyzer.  Now you must decide...repair the current system, consider replacing it with a used analyzer or make the bigger investment in a new system.  All options cost more than you can afford...your budget is too tight already.

But what more could you have done to avoid this?  Along with proper care of an XRF Analyzer, many organizations that want to avoid these situations opt for an XRF Protection Plan from Eastern Applied Research.  When an company purchases a plan, which are also known as Customer Service Agreements (CSA's), they purchase piece of mind.  Whether its the Full CSA or the 50-50 CSA, a customer in the situation above would simply call Eastern Applied to schedule a service tech...the repair bill would be covered and limit (or eliminate) the costs to the organization and the dent in your budget.

In todays economy, when budgets are tightest, more companies should put themselves in the position of having an XRF that requires major repairs...is it better to wait until the problems occur to consider your options or is it better to pro-actively protect your XRF investment?
